In April, students took to the stage of the newly named Dan and Karen Pritzker Auditorium to present the musical Godspell. A timeless story of friendship, loyalty, and love, Godspell is structurally a series of Gospel parables interspersed with catchy pop songs.

The title comes from the Old English spelling of the word “gospel,” meaning “good news.” And theatrical good news this musical — this production — was!

The loose structure of the musical — largely skits and comic routines — invites interpretation and improvisation. Godspell is essentially about the creating of community. To bring out this theme, director David Baar set this production in Garfield Park and conceived of the characters as being Providence St. Mel students who play themselves but also play the ensemble of disciples who assume the roles of various parable figures. The actors nimbly moved from the comic to the serious to express the lessons of humility, love, acceptance, and fellowship. Sprightly staging was enhanced by spirited dancing, which was choreographed by Robert “Excell” Tate of the Joffrey Ballet.

The treasures of this Godspell were show-stopping vocal performances. To single out individuals would be unfair, for the production was such an ensemble effort, and every musical number was pitch perfect. Adding to the effort were the scores of students who worked behind the scenes to bring this production to enthusiastic audiences.

We thank The Benjamin B. Green-Field Foundation, a current supporter of our music program, whose generosity helped to make this production of Godspell possible.

More Godspell photos are available here

Providence St. Mel School has announced that it is streamlining its admissions procedure to make it easier for students to apply and register.Given the concern among thousands of Chicago families, and the limited number of openings in charter and selective enrollment schools, Providence St. Mel offers an unparalleled record of successful graduation and entrance into four-year colleges and universities. “We offer an exceptional, affordable choice for those families who are looking for something better,” said Jeanette DiBella, 16 year principal of PSM. “In our 5-year advanced placement audit, 91% of our students who take the AP exams pass them, compared to only 61% globally. And, we have a higher percentage of our students taking the exam than the average school,” Ms. DiBella added.

Only a very small percentage of families who have above-average students can find an opening in better schools. It is estimated by one local organization that 123,000 children are not in the quality of school they deserve. Providence St. Mel is a private school, but has extensive financial aid and scholarships for students in need. “All of our students have graduated from our school, and 100% of them have been accepted to four-year colleges…for 34 years in a row!” Ms. DiBella stated. “We are a superior choice for students who cannot get into selective enrollment schools.”

The streamlined entry process will allow students to use their current transcript or report card, and standardized test scores, as a preliminary basis for registration, in addition to an interview by PSM faculty and staff. In most cases, no additional or special testing will be required. The school now offers transportation from the south side and west side. Students in grades K-5 can transfer for the second semester beginning January 5th, all other grades may apply for admissions for the Fall 2013 term.

Providence St. Mel is a college preparatory school on Chicago’s west side that educates students from preschool through grade 12. Since 1978 when it became an independent school under the leadership of Paul J. Adams III, 100% of Providence St. Mel’s graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges, and an average of 50% of the school’s graduates have been accepted to top-tier universities since 2001. Providence St. Mel accomplishes these impressive results through an all-encompassing program of demanding curriculum, high-level instruction, high expectations and accountability.

Providence St. Mel is proud to announce that the ACE Charitable Foundation will be matching alumni donations dollar-for-dollar in the 2012-2013 school year! The goal for the ACE Alumni Challenge is to raise $50,000 through alumni donations; when matched it will mean $100,000 in additional support! This challenge grant applies to graduates from the classes of 1979-2012, representing the years that PSM has been an independent school. While alumni can choose from many areas of need — supporting the SOAL program, purchasing Celebration! tickets, sponsoring a seat in the newly renovated auditorium, or making a general donation — all of the financial support from the ACE Charitable Foundation will help provide scholarships to current PSM students.

Matthew Humphries, Class of 1992, has been donating consistently to Providence St. Mel since 2009. When asked why he gives back, Humphries explained, “I felt like a lot of who I am comes from my experience at Providence St. Mel. This took me a long time to figure out.” So far many efforts are underway to help bolster alumni support, including a new system of class captains. Each class (’79-’12) is represented by one to three captains who will help organize and encourage alumni donations. When asked to become a class captain for the class of 1992, Humphries enthusiastically agreed. Captain for the Class of 2003 and Associate Board member Jerald Gary also explained, “I was blessed enough to receive a scholarship that gave me access to the education I received at PSM. Without the support of others, my scholarship would not have been possible and I would not be where I am today. So I’ve made it a point to give back to the school for what it gave me and so that others can have the same opportunities that I did.”

A list of class captains and contact information, more details about the ACE Alumni Challenge, and how to make an online donation are available here. Alumni, get in touch with your class captains about ways to give back to PSM and upcoming events!
