Providence St. Mel School has announced that it is streamlining its admissions procedure to make it easier for students to apply and register.Given the concern among thousands of Chicago families, and the limited number of openings in charter and selective enrollment schools, Providence St. Mel offers an unparalleled record of successful graduation and entrance into four-year colleges and universities. “We offer an exceptional, affordable choice for those families who are looking for something better,” said Jeanette DiBella, 16 year principal of PSM. “In our 5-year advanced placement audit, 91% of our students who take the AP exams pass them, compared to only 61% globally. And, we have a higher percentage of our students taking the exam than the average school,” Ms. DiBella added.
Only a very small percentage of families who have above-average students can find an opening in better schools. It is estimated by one local organization that 123,000 children are not in the quality of school they deserve. Providence St. Mel is a private school, but has extensive financial aid and scholarships for students in need. “All of our students have graduated from our school, and 100% of them have been accepted to four-year colleges…for 34 years in a row!” Ms. DiBella stated. “We are a superior choice for students who cannot get into selective enrollment schools.”
The streamlined entry process will allow students to use their current transcript or report card, and standardized test scores, as a preliminary basis for registration, in addition to an interview by PSM faculty and staff. In most cases, no additional or special testing will be required. The school now offers transportation from the south side and west side. Students in grades K-5 can transfer for the second semester beginning January 5th, all other grades may apply for admissions for the Fall 2013 term.
Providence St. Mel is a college preparatory school on Chicago’s west side that educates students from preschool through grade 12. Since 1978 when it became an independent school under the leadership of Paul J. Adams III, 100% of Providence St. Mel’s graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges, and an average of 50% of the school’s graduates have been accepted to top-tier universities since 2001. Providence St. Mel accomplishes these impressive results through an all-encompassing program of demanding curriculum, high-level instruction, high expectations and accountability.
